Theory of Dispersion in a Granular Medium

چکیده
This report is a presentation of the theoretical aspects of the investigations and a few confirmatory laboratory studies of the dispersion process. The basic assumptions associated with the development of the dispersion equation, based on the applicability of a heuristic expression similar to Pick's law, are described. In general, these assumptions limit its application to a homogeneous medium in which the dispersion process is anisotropic. The present level of knowledge is made apparent through the presentation of several solutions for the differential equation that approximates the dispersion process. Adsorption and its effect on the fate of a contaminant is given only limited discussion because of the lack of formal studies, on a macroscopic scale, applicable to the hydrologic regimen. The equations approximating dispersion in a two-fluid system (salt-fresh water) are also presented.

On the apparent particle dispersion in granular media
The apparent particle dispersion in a granular medium due to the combined effects of random granular arrangements and interstitial fluid flow was studied. The particle motion was a two-dimensional random walk on the transverse plane. The corresponding dispersion coefficient was found by sampling all possible trajectories with the aid of two granular media models. The theoretical results were ve...
متن کاملStudy of Solute Dispersion with Source/Sink Impact in Semi-Infinite Porous Medium
Mathematical models for pollutant transport in semi-infinite aquifers are based on the advection-dispersion equation (ADE) and its variants. This study employs the ADE incorporating time-dependent dispersion and velocity and space-time dependent source and sink, expressed by one function. The dispersion theory allows mechanical dispersion to be directly proportional to seepage velocity. Initial...
متن کاملDispersion of Love Wave in a Fiber-Reinforced Medium Lying Over a Heterogeneous Half-Space with Rectangular Irregularity
This paper concerned with the dispersion of Love wave in a fiber-reinforced medium lying over a heterogeneous half-space. The heterogeneity is caused by the consideration of quadratic variation in density and directional rigidity of lower half-space. The irregularity has been considered in the form of rectangle at the interface of the fiber-reinforced layer and heterogeneous half-space. The dis...

متن کاملDispersion of Torsional Surface Wave in a Pre-Stressed Heterogeneous Layer Sandwiched Between Anisotropic Porous Half-Spaces Under Gravity
The study of surface waves in a layered media has their viable application in geophysical prospecting. This paper presents an analytical study on the dispersion of torsional surface wave in a pre-stressed heterogeneous layer sandwiched between a pre-stressed anisotropic porous semi-infinite medium and gravitating anisotropic porous half-space. The non-homogeneity within the intermediate layer a...
